Retainer Instructions

Wearing your retainer as directed is a crucial part of maintaining your orthodontic results. Without consistent use, your teeth may begin to shift back to their original positions.

General Guidelines:

  • Wear your retainer exactly as prescribed by your orthodontist to keep your teeth properly aligned.
  • When not in use, always store your retainer in the protective case provided. Never wrap it in a napkin—it can easily be thrown away, especially in school lunchrooms or restaurants.
  • After eating and brushing, place the retainer back in your mouth promptly to maintain consistent wear.

Cleaning Your Retainer:

  • Clean your retainer once a day using a toothbrush and toothpaste with warm (not hot) water. This helps remove plaque and prevents odors.
  • You may use a product like Efferdent® or another retainer-cleaning solution occasionally, but this should not replace daily brushing.

Important Reminders:

  • Keep your retainer away from pets. Animals love to chew on them—always follow the rule: in your mouth or in the case.
  • You may notice some difficulty speaking at first. This is normal. Practice speaking, reading, or singing aloud to adjust more quickly.
  • Retainers are delicate. Handle them with care to avoid damage. If your retainer is lost, damaged, or uncomfortable, contact our office right away. Do not attempt to adjust it yourself.
  • Bring your retainer to all appointments so your orthodontist can check its fit and condition.
  • Remove your retainer when eating, brushing your teeth, or swimming.
  • Avoid exposure to heat: Do not leave your retainer in a hot car, near hot water, in your pocket, in the washing machine, or wrapped in napkins.

With proper care, your retainer can last for many years and help ensure your smile stays beautifully aligned!
