Frequently Asked Questions About Orthodontics
What is orthodontics?
Orthodontics, also known as dentofacial orthopedics, is a dental specialty focused on diagnosing, preventing, and correcting dental and facial irregularities, such as misaligned teeth and jaws.
What is an orthodontist?
An orthodontist is a dentist who has completed an additional two to three years of specialized training in orthodontics. This training enables them to straighten teeth, correct jaw misalignments, and enhance the function and aesthetics of your smile.
When is the best age to visit the orthodontist?
Any age can be the right age to improve your smile. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic visit around age seven. However, orthodontic care isn’t just for kids—one in five orthodontic patients is an adult. Whether you’re an adult or seeking care for a child, it’s never too early or too late to visit an orthodontist.
How should I care for my teeth while wearing braces or a retainer?
- Brush after every meal and floss at least once daily.
- Use fluoride toothpaste and consider a fluoride rinse as recommended by your orthodontist or dentist.
- If you remove your retainer to eat, always brush and floss before putting it back in and store it safely in its case.
- Clean your retainer daily using a toothbrush and toothpaste, or as instructed, soak it in a denture-cleaning solution. Never use boiling water or a dishwasher.
- Limit sugary foods and drinks, as sugar increases bacteria and plaque.
- Avoid sticky, chewy, and hard foods like caramel, gum, ice, and hard candy, which can damage braces.
- Maintain regular dental checkups every six months to ensure your teeth and gums stay healthy during treatment.
What are braces?
Braces are orthodontic devices used to align and straighten teeth. Types of braces include:
- Clear braces
- Ceramic braces
- Lingual braces (placed behind the teeth)
- Self-ligating braces
- Invisible aligners (like Invisalign)
- Traditional metal braces
How long will I need to wear braces?
Treatment duration varies depending on the individual. Most people wear braces for 6 to 30 months, with the average treatment lasting around 22 months.
Do braces hurt?
Braces don’t usually hurt, but you may experience mild discomfort for a few days after they are placed or adjusted. This is temporary and part of the normal adjustment process.
Do I need to brush more often with braces?
Yes. With braces, you should brush at least three times a day and floss daily. This helps remove food particles trapped around the brackets and wires. Your orthodontist can show you proper techniques to keep your teeth clean and healthy during treatment.
Do I still need regular dental checkups with braces?
Absolutely. Routine dental visits are even more important during orthodontic treatment. Braces can trap food and plaque in hard-to-reach areas, increasing the risk of cavities and gum disease. Your dentist and orthodontist will work together to protect your oral health.
Will braces interfere with sports, music, or singing?
You can still participate in all your normal activities with braces. If you play contact sports, it’s recommended to wear a mouthguard to protect your braces and teeth. Playing instruments or singing might take a short adjustment period, but you’ll be able to continue as usual.
